RAT BARON
by Tim Nolan
I was inspired the
pictures Brandon posted of the real 1:1 Rat Baron, so I decided to make my own
version. I used the basic body shell, but opted for a flathead from Monograms
48' Woody kit. I didn't use the interior shell, but fabricated a sheet metal floor pan,
used some scrap box seats, and redid the dash with a photo etched piece. I
drilled out some of gauge holes, and pulled scale wire thru for an unfinished
look! I built a windshield frame from aluminum tube, and used sheet acrylic for the window.
The body is painted a fade of red primer and Testors flat rattle can red, and I
dry-brushed and weathered a lot of the body and motor with dirty paint thinner
and flat black. I ran a fuel line and only the basic wiring. Parts-box tires and
rims are treated in the same manner, and the whitewalls were hand-painted with
Createx Auto Air basecoat white. Helmet is flat aluminum. The grille is from a
glue-bomb Tijuana Taxi, gas tank from the Beer Wagon. This was my first rat rod
attempt, and it was a nice departure from my usual paint jobs!!
