This build is my shot at a Richard Carroll style build, although in my opinion, it failed miserably. I’m sure Dick would tear it to shreds (he’s real good at that! Ha!) in all
aspects if he got hold of it.
I first built the front powered section using a modified Lil’ Gasser chassis, with a parts-pack Allison engine. If you’ve never built this motor, it’s quite an experience! With lot’s of finicky small parts, plus the complete chrome plating, it is a tedious job, but is well worth the effort you put into it when it’s done. I left it unplumbed, although I may add a few water and gas lines later. Rims are turned aluminum, and the tires are resin cast Richard Carroll designs done by Joe Demicola. Paint on the entire build is HOK kandy
blue, teal, and lime gold over silver micro flake basecoat.
The rear cab section is entirely scratch built using sheet plastruct. I drew this thing about 50 times before I settled on this shape. The axle supports are from the Lil Mixer, with aluminum tubing with wire cores for axles. Blue tinted
Mylar is used for windows. The top opens on homemade hinges, which is probably the worst disaster I created. The fit is finicky, and they work like crapola. I ran into a bit of warpage on the deck lid for some reason just recently, and it’s possible the paint got too it if the primer may have been a bit too thin. I scratch made an instrument cluster with bits and pieces from the scrap box and some photo reduced
gauges, and added some other details from the parts box as well. The gas tank (underneath) and water tank (inside) are polished stainless tubing capped on the ends with some old chrome hubcaps. Rear light is made from red
Mylar backed with foil.
Because of all of the rims and tires, this thing weighs about 3 pounds, and I have broken the rear axle supports off twice! (I now slide a piece of poster board under it to pick it up!)
